They came out of the box pretty much ready to play, just a few turns of the tuning wrench had them good to go. I was pretty impressed by the sturdy construction and the real skin heads. My son has been happily beating on this set for a couple of weeks now, and he seems to really be enjoying them. The skins have broken in now with the frequent playing, and that has softened the tone a little. This set really packs a good sound into a small package. Highly recommended if you want a good set of starter bongos for yourself or your kids. Would also make a good travel set or something to keep in your office for those days when you just want to bang your own drum.
